Mr Malone,

I love Andrew and think that Wortham Krimmer is a wonderful actor. It saddens me that Andrew has practically disappeared from the canvas. One of JFP's many, many blunders. My question has to do with the 'almost Marty&Andrew affair'. I admit that I did not like that storyline. I wonder what was the purpose of that storyline? And why did the physical affair never take place? Did you realize that it wasn't going over well with the Cassie&Andrew fans?

Or was it just never intended to go that far?

Other than that storyline, I loved your work on One Life To Live

Dear Mary K,

I share your fondness for the character Andrew Carpenter and for Wortham Krimmer who played the part. I'm sorry to hear that Andrew is rarely on the canvas there days. He was for me an integral member of the Llanview community and very much at the heart of the vision I had for the show.

My memory of Andrew is first of all, his love for Megan and his noble setting-aside of his own pained and unrequited feelings in order to help free Megan's husband and bring him back to her before she died.

Next of course he was the heart and soul of one of our most controversial (and honored) stories--The Accusation. (Sometimes called the Billy Douglas Story or the Quilt Story.) In this period, Marty played the troubled and trouble-making antagonist--whose jealousy over Andrew led her to lie about his relationship to Billy and so to set in motion the horrors of homophobia in the town. It led as well to the romance between Cassie and Andrew, to the reconciliation of Andrew and his father Sloan, the awakening love between Viki and Sloan, and ultimately to the redemption of Marty herself.

The closeness between Marty and Andrew--the emotional help they provided each other--was always deep and complex. Frankly I don't remember details of an 'almost affair' between them. Although I would suspect that there would have developed a sexual attraction, it seems to me that Andrew's commitment to his marriage and Marty's honoring of that marriage would be an insuperable barrier to any physical affair. Besides wasn't Marty in love with Patrick?

I haven't closely followed the show in many years--the changes are too troubling for me. I gather that the Carpenter marriage did break up. But then all these people appear to be gone anyhow and Llanview a different town.

Cordially,
Michael
